If you sell a product or service, or spend money on any type of marketing or advertising campaign, then you really need to do a survey. 

Survey means to carefully examine public opinion with regard to an idea or product. 

You conduct a survey so that you can find what 'buttons' a group has. A button is a subject or phrase or concept that communicates the reality or perceptions of your buying population. Once you have discovered the button, you then have a concensus or reality about that market. With a reality, you can then effectively establish an agreement, and tailor your marketing, product or service to satisfy a need in that market. 

The button is used to get the public's agreement to hear the message, and the message is the communication, the thought, the significance you want to get across to your audience.

Without a survey, you are simply spending money with no real way to measure the success, or know if it will hit or miss. Or if you gear the survey to collect the answers you want, you aren't getting the 'real' button, but confirming your assumed one. Let your target audience tell you the reality before you invest heavily at the back end. Be sure to have sufficiently planned with a survey.
